Kids and Medication

Read this news story about a young child and prescription psychiatric medication. What are your reactions to the story? Based on the short discussion yesterday about trauma and changes in the brain, what inferences can be made about this type of scenario?

  2. My reaction to the story is that that young boy shouldnt have been on all those medications at a young age - and i think that he was blessed because those medications didnt mess him up. I dont think doctors should prescript more than 3 meds. to children unless its a condition that they might need more. I infer that kids might be traumatized because medicine there taking and it happenins at a young age. Also some medicine doese cause trauma in the brain. For example i took a medication at the age of 7 and it gave me eternal shaking in my hands for life- and its a severe case but it changed me. Meds should be giving out based on how the infection needs to be treated- thats how kids get messed up a young age. These meds that the boy were given could of messed him up for life- and traumatized his brain but thank god that he pulled through.

  3. I feel as though this article proved all that is wrong with science. The people who diagnosed the little boy should have waited until he was a little older and they should have incorporated other means of treatment in his life until he was old enough to recieve treatments that would work. It's not fair that children have to be burdened with taking multiple medications, when they could have waited a few years and recieved better medication, which would limit the amount of medicine that they'd have to take. The diseases and disorders that people suffer from are beyond human control. Although humans can fix the situation, or try to stop it from the beginning, it is apart of life that even with medicine, can't be fixed or controlled. So it's better if they wait a few more years until the child is able to be really observed and diagnosed than when they are first born and still developing from an infant to a toddler.

  4. It's good that the FDA put stronger warnings on these medication for parents and doctors because many parents are instructed to give their children medicine because the doctors tell them it's the best thing to do. If the parents are told and made aware of the medicines, success and failure rates, and the consequences of taking them instead of just being told to take them, then there would be less medicated children.

  5. I dont think that children should be medicated until they are tweleve years old. For one because early in life their brains have a lot of developing to do and to medicate them can stop the development.Aslo it can alter their personlaities it does that to even adults. From experience I have saw an adults attitude change in an instant because of medication and they are not aware of the change. I think that some conditions should be treated early on like Autism and other things. I think they shouldnt give tem as heavily medicated doses. Another reason I dont think they should treat certain disorders because it makes a person who they are. If we were all the same and acted all the same we would live in a pretty boring world. The only cercumstance where they should treat a child with a disorder is if it interfers with their ability to learn. For example we thought my sister had ADHD before she was even tested we vowed that we would not put her on treatment. We were afriad that she would end up just like the little boy did not his own person just full on medication. So in some ways I agree with the fact that children should be treated only if it effects their learning abilities. Other than that I feel like it gives the individual character and no one should take that away.

  6. I think that today people just dont know how to discipline their kids or they plain just dont want to and so they will turn to doctors. They hope that the doctor will tell them its a medical problem that can be fixed with this simple pill or medication but in reality a lot of the time its just a matter of disciplining the child. A lot of doctors are getting paid under the table by drug companies to push there drug so doctors have an extra investment on getting children on drugs for behavior that they dont need in the first place. They will try to rationalize it by drawing conclusions that there behavior is from a disorder and not from just being a normal kid. There are children who do have a disorder and might need the drug but parents should get second opinions before agreeing to put there young child on heavy medication.

  7. I believe that medication for things such as attention deficit are not needed. I believe that drugging these children up for being hyper may be doing a little too much. I once was told that I had an attention deficit problem and a little discipline took care of that. An inference that can be made based on last weeks discussion is that children follow what adults do and even build on that. I believe that in a lot of these incidents the parents are to blame. As far as the child being diagnosed with a problem as an infant, it just sounds rediculous to me. Parents must understand that a child can turn out fine if the parents decide to become parents. Families like mine don't have time to deal with these small things so we would simply choose discipline over any medications. I'm so apalled.

  8. After reading this story I feel like the doctors that are giving out this medication to these young children these medications too early need to learn that more about the high risk of this. This can seriously harm these children and it affects me because I know a child with this disease, so this could easily be that child in the story. In the story they said that if the medicine is given in a early stage of the disease, which is sometimes too early, it can cause problems with the brain. This can lead to new problems and this can seriously harm or even kill one of these young children. I think that this whole scenario is very sad, and I can only imagine how the parents of these children must feel about this happeneing. They are probably very upset but even more worried about the safety and health of their children. I would probably try to sue the doctor that gave my child the treatment or even the whole hospital.

  9. After i read this article i was stunned. I didn't realize that it had become a problem. When i was younger i too was hyper and rowdy but my moms never let me get on any medication. So with that said i think that the reason it's a problem is that because some parents aren't ready to be parents and don't know how to raise a child. A child throws trantrums and fits. You have to deal with it and teach them to stop that behavior. Medication isn't the answer the answer for everything and i too many people are too willing to take whatever. People need to stop depending on that stuff so much and need to be more skeptical about what they take. Most time you have to stride through it and you'll be ok, there isn't any real need to be on 3 or 4 diffent pill before you even hit 5 years old. It's quite ridiculous.

  10. This article is very true in my eyes. I say this because most times when you tell your doctor something is wrong with you depending on what it is they give you medicine. They don’t do any inside looks these days. What every happen to an X-ray? They rather spend less money prescribing patience’s drugs than spending more money to do the X-ray. I feel that starting out giving the child drugs can make their whole life different. For one they could easily get addicted to the drug and then when they grow up they could be messed up in the head because they have been taking these drugs since day 1. If they are too young to have the drug in the first place then no one knows what the side effects could be. These could make changes in the brain or potentially mess the brain up in the long run.

  11. Children shouldn’t be exposed to many different prescription drugs at such a young age. Doctors nowadays seem to think that any little “problem” with young children can be solved through giving them something that may be able to control it. I don’t think that Kyle should’ve been given so many drugs to start with. His mother obviously didn’t have tolerance for her son and quickly resorted to a medicial escape. Even she noticed the difference in her son’s behavior and how he had a “blank” look in his eyes. All the prescription drugs he was forced to take stole his childhood from him. I can understand that some children do have severe problems that need to be controlled but that doesn’t mean parents should resort to medications in every situation.

  12. My reaction to this article is that I think there should be a certain age that kids can be given all this medications. I think the doctor who gave all the medication to the little kid really didn’t know what he was doing because is common sense that such a strong medicines could do some damage to the kid. I feel like young children should not be given all this type of strong medicine because medicine could really damage their brain especially because they starting to growth and they are in their development process. This article makes me feel kind of afraid because it’s very usual that anyone can be taking any type of medicine and suffer a brain damage. For example I have a cousin that has always suffered from asthma and has taken all this medications. Now his 11 but he always seems to be lost in the world.
