"Textracted " Driving

Read the following story from the NY Times and this one from the AdCouncil .Also watch the two videos. Which type of tactic works better? Why or why not? What could be done differently to make the message more effective?

  2. The two tactics are the scare tactic and the speak up tactic. I think they both work hand in hand together. The scare tactic works because it puts a picture in teenage minds of what could happen. Now that I drive I see the scare of these things. When i am driving I put my fone all the way in my purse on the floor and I dont answer it until I am totally in park. Especially if others are in the car with me not only is my life in danger but theirs also. The speak up tactic also works too. I never let someone who else is driving text or talk on the phone while I am in the car. Thats for my saftey first and theirs. It is different if they want to put their life in danger but mine also I dont think so . I think that countries and states should use both tactics to get a broader message across. And I think they should take it more seriously. Even though I believe in both tactics I think the graphic video took it to a nex extent, maybe they should show testimonies about a person who was texting and driving and this happened to them. This could scare a person to the point of not wanting to drive at all. This is still effective but graphic. I think the second video sends the message of being annoying can help them stop but the point of making it a joke doesnt help. It makes people view it as a joke and not as serious. Maybe if the person in the back was one of his real friends and he told him how dangerous and gave statistics and maybe a story that he knows about what could happen, but making a joke out of it doesnt help at all

  3. I Believe that the first story was true that in order for people, teens specifically need to be scared personally before they start thinking things through. They need to have a certain thing such as a crash, or killing stem from them using their phones while driving before they take it to the head that this could actually happen to them, and that it's not just for play. It makes sense that although people will see these types of commercials and ads, they will go back to their regular behavior because it's not as personal. So i think that before you do these ads, make them as personal as you can. The gore will scare somebody for awhile but by making it personal, it makes it hit home more. The tatic i believe works best is the Wales tactic. American film producers want things to be safe but truthful by producing things that will scare somebody instead of prevent them from doing what they do. The Wales tactic is more efficient because although it's scary, it could prevent a person from texting in fear that that could happen to them.
Wales: I could see why the film would be scary but for some reason I couldnt feel scared as other people might. I felt like they were all too carefree because nobody was paying attention to the road. But I can see why this would hit home to a person who has ever been in a situation where they are left to feel guilty for something that they aided in happening.
American: I wouldnt take that seriously because I would laugh at it. With the guy making funny "jokes" and saying things that made me laugh forced me to not take him seriously at all. They could make this ad more serious and make the situation not as light as they make it seem.

  4. The more serious tatic works better when talking about accidents like this. The reason for this is becuase if you see something more serious and what could really happen then, you are a little less likely to do such things, whether they are illegeal or not. Just knowing what could happen makes people think twice about making the right decisions when it comes to something as serious as texting and driving. If you make it into a joke it doesnt really work out to be a good tactic because people will take the law for a joke and they will attempt to text and drive. If they find it to be successful they will continue to do it and make themselves at higher risk to cause an accident.

  5. One huge problem that is going on in the United States is the amount of car accidents that have been going on. There is a lot of accidents happening because of peoples carelessness behind the wheel. One thing that has been going on is the texting, people are on their phones or texting while driving and they get distracted. That leads to people missing out on important things that are happening and then people end up crashing. People may not understand how important this issue is, so there were several videos made to show. These videos showed a girl driving and texting, resulting in a 3 car crash that killed all of her friends and a few of the drivers in the other car. The other video is of a man texting and driving and his friend says something to him about it making him stop, but it was more ofo a joke. The first video had more of a impact because it looked so real, and it also showed us what the result of texting and driving could be and how dangerous it really is. There was nothing that should have been done differently about the first video, but the second one could have been more serious because it seemed to be more targeted towards making people laugh instead of actually taking it seriously. Thats how I feel about these two videos.

  6. I believe that the more graphic of the commercials should be the one that is shown because this commercial shows exactly what happens when someone is texting a driving. Teens believe that they are invincible and watching this commercial shows the gory and gruesome truth of what happens when someone texts and drives. I seen a commercial that was a black screen and then the words "what r u d" on the screen and then a woman in the back says, "This is the message my daughter was typing when she drifted off the road and killed herself. Teens need to be shown this so that it scares them into not doing such stupid things like texting behind the wheel. Just like both of the actors that drove in these commercials they both thought that they could handle it. They thought that they had things under control like all teenagers. This is why they need to be taught a lesson and the scary commercial will do just that.

  7. Real Live Tactics work better to actually see how it effects people- and what they go through. This works better because is shows people how effective and car accident can harm, hurt,or kill you, Also it shows how it effects others people lives. What can be done differently is to show the after math of what really happens after a car accident- after the hospilatzion- and how your whole life changes. To me people need to be more careful, of what they do and how they drive. Dont not text and drive its a bad thing i didnt like the american commercial because it didnt send the message across- it was kind of a joke. But the first video really hit home. Even though I believe in both tactics I think the graphic video took it to a nex extent, maybe they should show testimonies about a person who was texting and driving and this happened to them. This could scare a person to the point of not wanting to drive at all. This is still effective but graphic

  8. The tactic that works better is the foreign one because it has a lot of dramatization which allows viewers to remember it. Something that could be done to make the video more effective is telling true stories and including the people involved in a crash to speak on what happened. If the video contained small clips of victims explaining how horrible it feels to lose a friend or how much they wish they could take it back more viewers would be affective. Another way could be promoting devices that avoid the use of cell phones while driving. A few devices are ear bluetooths, or bluetooths which are built in some cars. Speakers can be another option besides the use of bluetooth. There could also be a friend or relative who can text or call for you.

  9. I think both tactics would work good, it all depends in the person. The shocking tactic might work better for some people because it helps create conscience of how can you not only hurt yourself but also other innocents. With this tactic the person would have a picture on his/her mind about what could happened and they might be scared to kill his/her friend or other close friend. In the other hand the speak up tactic would also work with some person because the person speaking up can convince him/her to put her cell phone away because he/she is there consistently repeating her/him the same thing over and over. I think many things have been done to avoid texting while driving but I think people are just reckless about it because even though they know is wrong they still do it, so I feel like people are not going to take conscience about the problem until they experience a similar situation related to texting while driving .

  10. I think showing what really happens works the best because for me the one ad with the dude in the back makin jokes, it like it's not trying to be serious. But when you saw the people heads knocking about the glass and their necks cracking, i paid attention and was like, this is real. The other way was ok but it doesn't hit as hard as the the one with the people dying and blood everywhere.

  11. I believe the ‘scare’ tactic works much better than the humor one. When you get to see the real effect of what driving and texting can do you have a different view on it. I’m not saying everyone would be affected by it but it would definitely have a greater effect than just laughing at the matter. Some things have to be displayed in more gruesome ways to have an impact on teens. When you take something as a joke and display it as a joke the teen will not think it’s that serious. I agree with the idea of making harsher laws against using technology while driving. When the law has harshly enforced punishments along with it teens would be more cautious while driving because of what can happen if even being pulled over for texting and driving. An additional tactic would be using real life stories. When seeing other real life stories a more sentimental point can be touched. Teens could be more persuaded by this as well rather than striking a humorous view.
